We are just half way through 2016 yet have lost so many famous faces already. Some of these talented people were suffering from terminal illnesses but some deaths were unexpected – yet all were a shock to the world. Here we remember some of the wonderful musicians, actors and comedians who have sadly died this year.
This superstar passed away at the start of the year aged 69, much to the shock of the nation. As a legend of rock, he died just three days after releasing his 25th album. He’d been secretly fighting cancer for 18 months.
Celebrated British actor Alan Rickman also passed away aged 69, after a battle with cancer. He was well known for his brilliant portrayal of Professor Snape in the Harry Potter series.
BAFTA winning actress and comedienne Victoria Woods died in April this year, aged 62. She was famous for her satirical comedy TV shows and her death left fellow actress Julie Walters heartbroken.
Prince’s death shook the world and there is still some controversy surrounding his passing, as he was found alone in a lift. The musical megastar died at his home and recording studios aged just 57.
Sir Terry Wogan
Famous broadcaster and TV presenter Terry Wogan passed away in January after a short battle with cancer. He’d quit his Radio 2 show and had to pull out of Children In Need a few months earlier, but this was due to a bad back.
Muhammad Ali was one of the most legendary boxers of all time, and sadly passed away this year aged 74. The former heavyweight champion of the world had suffered from Parkinson’s disease and was taken to hospital with respiratory problems.
Actor Anton Yelchin died following a car accident aged 27. The Russian born Star Trek star was found by friends on June 19 at his home in San Fernando Valley. His death comes a month before the release of the third film in the sci-fi franchise, Star Trek Beyond.
His other films include Terminator: Salvation, Alpha Dog and Fright Night.
Newton Edward Daniels, known by his stage name Paul Daniels, was an English magician and television performer. He achieved international fame through his television series The Paul Daniels Magic Show, which ran on the BBC from 1979 to 1994.
David Alan Gest was an American entertainer, comedian, producer and television personality. Gest produced the highest-rated musical television special in history.
More recently, we lost another great British actor to cancer. Caroline was best known for her work on sitcoms such as The Royle Family and The Fast Show, and was just 52 when she lost her battle with the disease.
